CNN —The 2024 Paris Olympics are creeping ever closer and for female US gymnasts, including global superstar Simone Biles, the Core Hydration Classic on Saturday represents the first step towards qualifying for the Summer Games. CNN —Three-time Olympic champion Gabby Douglas’ return to competitive gymnastics – originally set for this weekend – will have to wait, after the American tested positive for Covid-19. Douglas last competed almost eight years ago at the Rio Olympics, but announced her intention to return to the sport in an Instagram post last year. “I was so excited to get back out on the competition floor, but unfortunately, I just tested positive for Covid. I’m crushed but I’ll see you guys soon!”Douglas competes on the uneven bars during the 2016 US Olympic team trials. Douglas was due to compete in three disciplines at this weekend’s meet: the beam, floor and vault.

But the four-times Olympic gold medallist cleared up any confusion this past weekend, proving she is as big a threat as ever one year out from the next Olympics. In addition to the all-around, Biles is favoured on the world stage for the vault and floor exercise golds due to her unmatched difficulty. The Russian women, competing as the Russian Olympic Committee due to a doping ban, captured team gold in Tokyo, leaving the United States to settle for silver. Contenders could include an unprecedented three Olympic all-around champions as 2012 winner Gabby Douglas, 27, recently announced plans to join Biles and 2020 champion Sunisa Lee, 20, on the road to Paris. The Paris squad will be selected at U.S. team trials at the end of June next year, a month before the 2024 Games.
